S. military helicopter that was reported missing has been found in east San Diego County but search efforts continued Wednesday for the military personnel who were on board, MCAS Miramar said. The five Marines were traveling on the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter, flying from Creech Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada, to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, when it was reported"overdue" Tuesday, the Marine Corps said. They had been conducting unit-level training in Vegas before their return. After an overnight search in the mountainous area about 35 miles east of San Diego, the helicopter was found in Pine Valley at around 9:08 a.m. Wednesday, MCAS Miramar said. Ground and aviation teams continue their search for the aircrew near Interstate 8 and Kitchen Creek Road. The search comes as San Diego is experiencing a winter storm that has produced heavy rain since Tuesday night and has brought several inches of snow to the mountains. The last known location of the helicopter came from a ping to Cal Fire's dispatch center at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Cal Fire sent several engines and an ambulance to the area overnight. Cornette said crews walked through tough terrain to reach the last known location, but did not find any signs of the helicopter. Additional resources were sent at daybreak Wednesday, including members of SDSO, Cal Fire San Diego, Border Patrol and the California Civil Air Patrol. Drones and other surveillance technology are being used in the search, Cornete said, who added crews are in coordination with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.Weather conditions -- a mix of snow and rain -- present a challenge for rescue crews, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said. The Cleveland National Forest covers 720 square miles and many parts of its steep, rocky mountains have limited trails. Crews have"limited access to the area, its muddy, steep terrain, snowing out, many of our vehicles that are going out there have a chance of getting stuck," Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said. The department's off-road 4x4 vehicles are being used in the search, as are a sheriff's helicopter and drone tools from the U.S. Border Patrol. The National Weather Service in San Diego called for 6 to 10 inches of additional snow in the mountains above 5,000 feet and gusty winds late Wednesday. Pine Valley has an elevation of about 3,700 feet. President Joe Biden was briefed on the missing Marines, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who answered questions as the president flew to New York City for campaign fundraisers. “We’re watching this closely and again our thoughts are for the best,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said. The CH-53E Super Stallion is the heavy-lift helicopter used by Marines around the world. Search Continues for Missing Hiker on Mount Baldy, Three Others RescuedThe search continues for a missing hiker on Mount Baldy while crews rescued three other lost hikers a day after the first was reported missing. The missing hiker, identified as 22-year-old Lisei Huang from El Monte, was reported missing Feb. 4. The following day, crews rescued three experienced hikers who got lost on the Bear Canyon Trail on Mount Baldy. According to authorities, the three lost hikers were found at 8,400-ft. elevation after a four-hour search.
