Imagine texting your brother, only to later realize the man on the other side of the conversation might in fact have been his murderer.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - At 5:43 p.m. on August 14, 2020, a man named John William McClellan pulled his truck up to a Fairbanks gas station and filled the tank with diesel fuel. No one has seen him alive or dead since then; except possibly one man.

At the time, McClelland was a 61-year-old painter and handyman who lived in North Pole, Alaska with a roommate and coworker, Aaron Mitchell Hague. McClelland was in the process of putting his life back together after getting out of prison, after serving a 29-year sentence for killing his boss during a pay dispute. Two years after getting out in 2018, he seemed to be on the right track. He had a steady job, cooperative parole meetings, a fishing hobby and a beloved pet, an Australian Cattle dog. McClellan’s employer and parole officer were both surprised when he abruptly stopped showing up in mid-August, which was out of character for him. The exact date of his disappearance is debated, but on August 24 a local noticed his truck - a red, extended-cab GMC - sitting abandoned just south of North Pole. A few days earlier on August 19, McClellan’s brother received a series of startling texts from his brother’s phone saying that McClellan was taken to an urgent care for “cardiopulmonary issues” and was expected to go into surgery soon. Further texts asked for his brother to send him an amount of money that he had deposited with him for safekeeping, as well as around $10,000 for “transmission, rent and medical costs.” McClellan’s brother began to be suspicious, especially when McClellan would not pick up his calls. He called up a Fairbanks urgent care and two hospitals, who told him that McClellan had never been a patient. He then asked the Alaska State Troopers to make a welfare check. The troopers said there was no sign of McClellan at his home. They did, however, meet his roommate Hague driving McClellan’s jeep. Hague claimed that McClellan had sold him the vehicle some time prior, though the title was still under McClellan’s name.Investigation uncovered that in the days following McClellan’s disappearance, Hague had ‘borrowed’ his bank card to make several thousand dollars worth of purchases and cash withdrawals, including $1,460.90 worth of video gaming equipment, and a tarp and cleaning equipment from Home Depot. Despite being an immediate person of interest, Hague managed to successfully vanish for several months. He lived first under his brother Jesse’s identity, and then in Oregon under the identity of a man named Anthony Alcorn, whom he met in an Anchorage homeless shelter. When the real Alcorn was found dead in the woods on March 15, 2021, murdered by blunt force trauma to the head, Hague was discovered, arrested and charged. No signs of McClellan, alive or dead, have ever been found. Despite the lack of a body, Hague is being charged with his murder as well as Alcorn’s. Hague has been held without bail since his arrest on March 31, 2021, and our picture of those days in August remains incomplete.
