Travis Turner, the missing head football coach at Union High School in Virginia, has a harsh reality ahead of him if he's found alive
Missing high school football coach Travis Turner is facing time behind bars if he is found alive after a weeks-long search. Turner, 46, was charged with five counts of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor shortly after fleeing his Virginia home on November 20.
The solicitation charge carries “a more serious sentence” of between five to 30 years in prison, prosecutor Bobby Taghavi told the Daily Mail on Wednesday, December 3. If convicted, Turner would be forced to register as a sex offender, meaning he would no longer be permitted to work as a football coach or physical education teacher. “Someone like Travis Turner is sitting in a position where his life as he knows it is, for all intents and purposes, over,” said Taghavi, who is not involved in the Turner case. “He'll no longer be a coach, he'll no longer be a teacher, he's probably going to have a lot of issues within his family and within the community, especially when you're living in a small community with someone who's high-profile like him.” Turner disappeared into the wooded area behind his home with a gun, according to a statement from the family’s attorney on Friday, November 28. The coach’s residence is in Wise, Virginia, which has a population of less than 3,000, according to the 2020 census. While Turner’s family has supported him amid his disappearance — his wife, Leslie Caudill Turner, told the Daily Mail on November 25 that the charges against him are not “true” — Taghavi said the family would not bear any responsibility “as long as they didn't know and as long as they weren't complicit.” Taghavi said there is “no evidence” to suggest that Leslie, who has been married to Travis since 2001, was in any way involved or knowledgeable of her husband’s alleged actions. “They're also victims,” Taghavi said about the family. “It's very embarrassing to them, there's a social stigma of, ‘How could you not know? Were you in on it?'’”The United States Marshals Service joined the hunt for Turner on Monday, December 1, the same day they issued a $5,000 reward for information about his whereabouts. “The search remains active and ongoing with the assistance of the US Marshals Service and FBI,” a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police told Us Weekly on Wednesday. “We are still asking for the public’s assistance in providing any information that may lead to Turner’s whereabouts.” VSP said they are “following up on all tips received” and urged any individual with a tip about Turner’s location to call 911 or the Virginia State Police, or visit usmarshals.gov/tips. “On behalf of the family of Travis Turner, I wish to express their sincere gratitude to all who have shown concern during this difficult time,” the family’s attorney, Adrian Collins, said in his statement on Friday. The statement added, “It is the family’s prayer that Travis is safe and will have the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law.”
