The FBI is now involved in the search for William Neil McCasland, a retired U.S. Air Force major general who went missing in New Mexico two weeks ago.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the search for William Neil McCasland, a high-ranking retired U.S. Air Force Major General who went missing near his residence in Albuquerque, New Mexico, two weeks ago.

While there is currently no evidence of foul play, investigators have said they are pursuing every credible lead and tip as they turn to the public to help locate him.McCasland, 68, left his home in the area of Quail Run Court NE in Albuquerque on foot at approximately 11 a.m. on February 27, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office . A repairman was at the residence prior to his departure at around 10:00 a.m. Susan McCasland Wilkerson, McCasland's wife, left home for a medical appointment at 11:10 a.m. When she came back at approximately 12:04 p.m., he was not there. She contacted family and friends in a bid to locate him, but she later reported him missing at approximately 3:07 p.m. The investigation began immediately, according to the BCSO. McCasland left his phone, prescription glasses, and wearable devices at home. A Silver Alert has been issued in connection to his disappearance, and remained in effect as of Friday morning. Officials have refused to discuss medical details or speculate on McCasland's state of mind"due to privacy law."According to the sheriff's office, McCasland is 5 feet 11 inches tall with white hair and blue eyes. It added that he is"an avid outdoorsman" known to hike, run and cycle in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights neighborhood. McCasland is an astronautical engineer with degrees from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. During his career, he served as chief engineer on the Department of Defense's Global Positioning System program, system program director of the Space Based Laser Project Office, and director of special programs at the Pentagon. He was also in charge of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The base housed Project Blue Book, the military investigation into unidentified flying objects, according to Ohio State University. After his retirement nearly 13 years ago, he worked briefly for a company studying information on UFO phenomena. His wife recently confirmed McCasland's"brief association with the UFO community," but"This connection is not a reason for someone to abduct Neil. Neil does not have any special knowledge about the ET bodies and debris from the Roswell crash stored at Wright-Patt," she said. The sheriff's office has identified several objects that are unaccounted for in McCasland's residence, and which he may have had with him at the time of his disappearance. These include a light green shirt shown, hiking boots, a wallet, and a .38 caliber revolver with a leather holster. Investigators also found a gray U.S. Air Force sweatshirt approximately 1.25 miles east of McCasland's residence on March 7. While no blood was found during initial processing, additional analysis remains pending. It is not clear whether the sweater belongs to McCasland, but the finding prompted an additional targeted search effort in the area, the BCSO said. The search has now expanded to more than 700 homes in the neighborhood surrounding McCasland's residence, and requests for security video and information have been issued. Investigators have also used drones, helicopters, ground searches with search and rescue teams, and K9 searches, according to the BCSO. McCasland's disappearance has fueled rumors on social media. Air Force veteran Jason Sands told Red Panda Koala, a UFO-focused YouTube channel, that McCasland might have gone into hiding on his own accord. "There is a protocol within the legacy program that if you are one of the people they consider a key personnel and something is happening and they think you are at risk or you are a risk they will come and take you to their facilities and hide you away or if they think you are a threat they will come murder you," Sands said. "I think he is in hiding with friends, safe. He left his cell phone behind because he didn't want to be traceable. Good for him, I hope he stays hidden until it's safe for him to come back. That's my feeling that this is of his own accord." As of Friday morning, the sheriff's department said that it had not received any confirmed sighting or video showing McCasland leaving the area or indicating a direction of travel.
