Houston residents are facing a growing problem with missed trash pickups, leading to complaints and calls for a solution. The city council is considering implementing a trash fee to address the issue, which has been exacerbated by Hurricane Beryl's aftermath.
City of Houston data reveals that missed trash pickups have consistently topped Houston 's 311 complaints. On Monday, the city identified 'missed garbage pick up' as the second most frequent reason Houston ians reach out to 311. Records indicate that other solid waste-related concerns, such as missed recycling and heavy trash collections, have also repeatedly appeared on the list.
Last week, council members engaged in discussions about potential solutions after several Westbury residents expressed anxieties regarding recent missed waste pickups in their neighborhood. Several council members have proposed the implementation of a trash fee. Currently, Houston stands as the only major Texas city lacking such a fee. The city relies on tax revenue to finance the solid waste department. Advocates of the fee contend that the tax income generated is insufficient due to a property tax revenue cap established by voters in 2004. Last May, the Houston City Council approved a study to evaluate the solid waste department and the feasibility of imposing a trash fee. Mayor John Whitmire's office informed ABC13 on Monday that the study's findings are nearing completion and anticipated to be released within the month. 'I don't want to say they're not doing their jobs, but I just feel like we could definitely have a better experience,' stated Damon McClain. On Monday, McClain demonstrated to ABC13 a couch that he claimed had been in his grandmother's front yard for 'at least two months.' McClain's neighbor, Clayton Bruno, showed ABC13 instances of illegal dumping along Parker Road near Homestead Road. Bruno and several of his neighbors reported to ABC13 that they perceived an increase in illegal dumping following Hurricane Beryl. City officials have repeatedly conveyed to ABC13 that a considerable portion of the solid waste delays can be attributed to backlogs in debris removal following the storm
