Miss SA has defended its paid voting system after criticism from the public this week, saying it was an inclusionary process and some funds would be used to train the contestants.

The paid system was criticised by many online who said it was “tone deaf”, given how people have been economically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The funds will be used in two parts,” said Weil. “First, the funds will be applied to the upskilling, empowerment and training of our top 10, second, 10% of the proceeds will be attributed to our foundation. The funds will be used during the winner's reign for the social upliftment initiatives of her choice.”
Weil said the public's' votes will be the equivalent of that of a fifth judge. However, the number of times the public votes will not count.
