In today's Miss Manners column, advice columnist Judith Martin shares the best way to greet someone you may be sharing a room with while in the hospital. You can send your questions to Miss Manners through her email, [email protected] MISS MANNERS: My husband is in a rehabilitation facility, receiving physical therapy to improve his strength after orthopedic surgery. He is in a semiprivate room. His bed is by the window; the other bed is by the door.
GENTLE READER: The etiquette of the semiprivate room in a medical facility requires a delicate balance between familiarity and distance. One can hardly pretend the other person is not there, so initial introductions and greetings are in order. But it is also necessary to provide a level of privacy -- looking away when necessary -- that does not, in fact, exist. A brief “Good afternoon” will do as you move past.
