MissJuneteenth is here! claudioericka caught up with AlexisChikaeze to talk the importance of celebrating Juneteeth, her breakout role, and how she’s learning to define herself as a Black woman:

— the holiday commemorating the day Black slaves in Texas first learned they were freed two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. As communities across the country parade in celebration of Juneteeth, the historical significance of the holiday helps instill a sense of pride and self-worth back into Black communities' uprising in mourning and civil upset.

The definition of Black liberation and Black history forwards a story of rich yet often forgotten history. The 155th anniversary of of enslaved Blacks during a time where millions of the descendants of those same enslaved populations are demanding for the promise of life, liberty, and justice to also recognize Black lives.premieres the story of intergenerational beauty, trauma, and triumph through the eyes of a struggling single mother and local beauty queen.

Centered in the heart of Fort Worth, TX, the annual Miss Juneteeth pageant reimagines real life examples of Black excellence, beauty, and womanhood. The mother-daughter duo, starring Nicole Baharie and introducing Alexis Chikaeze, personifies complex identities of Black womanhood that are often explored when deferred dreams are passed down from one generation to another.

Much of what defines Black heritage and culture is anchored in the principles and practices instilled by Black women, therefore the role women in Black communities step into is venerated as essential and pre-defined. Alexis Chikaeze plays Kai, the daughter of a local beauty queen determined to build a new future for herself.
