Exactly two years ago, an SUV ran off the road in Eagle Mountain, Utah , hitting and killing two 3-year-olds, Hunter Jackson and Odin Ratliff, who were playing in the sand with toy tractors in a round pen at Cedar Valley Stables.
Brooke says what she misses most about her son is, “His smiles his dimples and that he wanted to make sure that everybody was happy so he would give you a hug whether he knew you or not.” She says her son made his presence known to his siblings. She says she has a lot of emotional breakdowns but says they try to take one day at a time. She and her husband talk with the Ratliffs often so that they’re not alone in their grief. She also says she attends support groups where those grieving can vent and that it helps.
Without going into graphic detail, the prosecution’s recent filing in the case – a memorandum in support of binding over Barlow for trial on two counts of first-degree murder under a depraved indifference theory – corroborates that there were two broken little bodies. Brooke says, “One of the hardest parts was getting Odin's dad to realize that it was not his fault it happened because he was the one who said yes to Odin and so he feels extremely guilty that he thinks he said yes to Hunter, and that's not what happened.”
