His damaged hands healed since 2019, acclaimed pianist will play with Poway Symphony Orchestra next Sunday

From the mid-1960s on, pianist Misha Dichter performed with esteemed conductors, collaborated with noted artists and ensembles, recorded dozens of classical-music recordings and toured the world.

Dichter will perform with the Poway Symphony Orchestra next Sunday afternoon at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. In 1982, while director of the Helena Symphony in Montana, LoPiccolo conducted a concert featuring Dichter. Ten years later, he and the pianist performed together again, this time in Idaho Falls.

The Poway Symphony Orchestra, the conductor explained, has a core of 35 to 40 dedicated volunteer members. They are augmented by professional musicians, making it a 65-piece ensemble. Beethoven’s Fifth was the composer’s first concerto Dichter learned. That means he’s performed the notoriously difficult piece for more than a half-century.

“Very often we would go from L.A. to San Diego because my immigrant father went into the lumber business. He was supplying lumber to the building boom of the 1950s. So, that’s another connection I have to San Diego.”George Gershwin was commissioned to compose his Concerto in F after the success of his famous “Rhapsody in Blue.
