Misconceptions about stress-related aspects of physical disease are prevalent.
They may persist because unlike disinformation they are typically not political or intended to mislead.Beliefs about how psychological factors influence physical health come in at least three major forms. There are the beliefs of researchers in the field, which represent scientific knowledge. Individuals have personal beliefs which may or may not agree with scientific knowledge. And personal beliefs are often shared by many individuals in a given segment of society or culture.
Health psychology is still a relatively young field, so some areas have not yet matured to the point where we can say there is established knowledge and strong consensus. And, even in its relatively brief history, there have been reversals of apparently well-established findings. These and other factors may contribute to inaccuracy in personal and cultural beliefs about psychology and health.
There were many clues in diverse research areas that one can point to. But the work of Ader and Cohen in which it was discovered that the immune system could be classically conditioned played a very important role. And this was not something that most immunologists would have thought possible. It is commonly believed that stress can cause or worsen the common cold because it suppresses the immune system.
But pain does not seem to arise from a separate sensory system just like the five basic senses, nor is it caused by their over-stimulation. Pain reflects a complex set of mechanisms .
