Rounding up the action at the Padres’ minor league affiliates
at Albuquerque, with Juan Fernandez leading the way with a grand slam for his first home run of the season.The 23-year-old Fernandez, a catcher serving as the DH on Tuesday, hit .271/.345/.318 but did not homer once while driving in 55 runs in 103 games to start the year at Double-A San Antonio.
Fernandez is hitting .440/.481/.560 in seven games since his promotion to El Paso. The grand slam was his first homer since hitting eight last year at San Antonio .after homering 13 times in 25 games with El Paso. Second baseman Matt Batten went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI and Fernandez , third baseman Eguy Rosario , first baseman Kyle Martin , left fielder Connor Hollis and center fielder Thomas Milone all had two hits.Left-hander Jay Groome opened the game with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings.
Six relievers combined for seven innings of two-run ball as the Chihuahuas piled up 17 strikeouts in the win. El Paso will play in a one-game Pacific Coast League championship on Friday against Reno in Las Vegas. The winner advances to Sunday’s Triple-A National Championship Game, also in Las Vegas.
