Minnesota Democratic leaders will convene an emergency meeting Thursday evening to respond to the chaos that broke out during a convention to endorse a candidate for a Minneapolis City Council race

Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chair Ken Martin gives interviews at the DFL election night party at the Intercontinental Hotel in St. Paul, Minn., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022. Martin says the Minnesota Democratic Party will consider expelling anyone involved in a brawl that broke out over nominations for a Minneapolis City Council seat. At least two people were injured in a confrontation, Saturday, May 13, 2023.

“We expect candidates and their campaign teams to work hard to curb such behavior when it comes from their supporters, staffers, or volunteers,” Martin said. “Warsame and his team took the opposite approach ... by escalating the situation and encouraging conflict.” Warsame has campaigned on a law-and-order message, saying on his website that he’s “committed to reducing crime and addressing issues such as car theft, organized crime, human trafficking, and the opioid crisis,” while also “dedicated to working collaboratively with law enforcement to reform policing practices and address issues of racial bias and discrimination within the department.”

Edwards compared the chaos to the kind of melee that can erupt at a sporting even where a couple people fight, and others join in with little thought.
