John Finucane raises concerns algae could spread to Waterworks
The Environment Minister is “engaging with officials” after blue green algae was found in North Belfast .
MP John Finucane has called on the Minister, Andrew Muir, to act swiftly amid concern the algae could spread to the Waterworks, also in North Belfast. The blue-green algal bloom with its toxic bacteria has sparked widespread concerns about pollution in Northern Ireland’s waterways.Read more: Pollution has killed over 1,200 fish in four incidents throughout June, say NIEA
He added: “I have also invited Belfast City Council and The Rivers Agency. With Boodles Dam and Waterworks Park in close proximity to the affected dam, I would urge the department to move at speed to prevent the further spread of this toxic algae. A DAERA spokesman said: “The Minister is aware of reports of Blue-Green algae at Ligoniel Dam and is engaging with officials on the matter. Minister Muir is firmly committed to tackling issues leading to poor water quality and continues to seek Executive approval for both the Environmental Improvement Plan for Northern Ireland and Lough Neagh Report and Action Plan.”
