“We’re living on top of ticking time bombs”: A dam collapse three years ago that killed 270 people still looms large over Brazilian communities
BRUMADINHO, Brazil—Nestled in the verdant countryside of southeastern Brazil, Brumadinho was a town where everybody knew each other, resident Daiane Gonçalves said. Now it is a place where everybody knows someone who died in the mining tragedy.
“There is so much sadness everywhere,” said Ms. Gonçalves, a 32-year-old accountant who lost friends and relatives when Vale SA’s mine-waste dam, killing 270 people. Ms. Gonçalves has sued Vale after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the wake of the disaster. “I can still hear the screams that day,” she said. “Everyone was in the street trying to call those who were missing…People were running around completely desperate, children were crying.
