Shares of both companies climbed in the past year on a ramp-up in production aimed at addressing rising demand from producers of renewable energy and electric vehicle makers. Ivanhoe Mines last year increased the capacity of its Kamoa-Kakula copper mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo threefold to over 330,000 tonnes, boosting net profit to a record $434 million in 2022 from $45 million the previous year.
Friedland made his fortune from Canadian nickel and is behind massive copper discoveries in Mongolia and the DRC. In 2022, he listed Ivanhoe Electric, which explores across the U.S. for copper, nickel and other metals seen as building blocks for a green economy. In July, Saudi Arabia’s state miner Ma’aden completed the purchase of a 9.9% stake in Ivanhoe Electric for $127.1 million. The two companies plan to jointly develop mining projects in Saudi Arabia.

The BMMR was De Beers’ last remaining mining right at Namaqualand Mines. De Beers has been conducting rehabilitation activities since it ceased operations on the BMMR in 2010, while looking for a responsible operator for the mining right. Kleinzee Holdings is a consortium led by Melki Mining Proprietary Limited and HolGoun Investment Holdings Proprietary Limited. Through the sale process, Kleinzee Holdings demonstrated extensive mining experience and the requisite resources to operate and further develop the mine.

Mine owner Kamoa Copper – a joint venture (JV) between base and precious metals developer Ivanhoe Mines, with 39.6% ownership; Zijin Mining Group, with 39.6% ownership; Crystal River Global, with 0.8% ownership; and the DRC government, with 20% ownership – has ordered Minetruck MT65 S haulers, the world’s highest payload underground truck in the field, as well as Scooptram ST18 S loaders, Boomer 282 face drilling rigs and Simba E70 S production drilling rigs.
