Chinese researchers have developed a miniature polarization photodetector inspired by the navigation abilities of desert ants. The device has various potential applications, including navigation, fingerprint detection, cancer tissue identification, and de-hazing images.
These tiny creatures possess a unique ability to perceive the polarization of sunlight, allowing them to find their way back to their nest even under the harshest conditions. Inspired by this incredible feat of nature, a team of Chinese researchers has developed a miniature, on-chip polarization photodetector . The team envisions a wide range of applications for the chip, including navigation, fingerprint detection, cancer tissue identification, and even de-haze images.
The researchers wrote in the study paper, 'This compact on-chip optoelectronic device demonstrates excellent performance in a wide range of applications including accurate bionic navigation, sharp image restoration in hazy scenes, stress visualization of polymers, and detection of cancerous areas in tissues without histological staining.' Polarization photodetectors (pol-PDs) are high-tech sensors that can detect the orientation of polarized light. This capability has numerous applications, like remote sensing, machine vision, and medical imaging. However, commercial pol-PDs often face challenges due to their reliance on bulky and complex optical components. The team explained that these devices are complex due to the intricate optical systems and numerous components required for their operation. A team of researchers led by Prof. Li Mingzhu from The Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has created this new on-chip integrated polarization photodetector to solve this problem. The team was impressed by the desert ants’ remarkable navigation ability. This feat is largely attributed to their specialized compound eyes, which possess specialized photoreceptor cells that detect the orientation of polarized light. They introduced a novel one-step nanoimprinting crystallization technique to fabricate a high-quality perovskite single-crystal-thin film with integrated grating arrays
