Though it fails to bring some threads together, Mindhunter remains a 'satisfying FBI mystery' in its second season. Read melvillmatic's full review:

—again selling us on the promise of that auteur’s grimly analytical style, his penchant for picking at the scabs of crusted-over tales of social deviance, his knack for shaping boilerplate writing into gemlike intellectual battles that knock his characters’ alliances to and fro.and a talented writing team—does once again set the template for this beguiling, riveting show, based on the book, and tracking the professional and private lives of the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit, or BSU .

Truthfully, those opening episodes can be a bit dull, with agreements made and understandings reached over the course of several tense but somehow vacant scenes. But when it works, as it largely does, watchingnever feels like work, even when the show’s at its most blandly expositional. Instead, the series is intently keyed into the rhythms of this peculiar job, balancing ongoing research into the minds of convicted killers with the fresh thrills of active cases.

Race is of course at stake here; when mothers of some of the disappearing black children in Atlanta question Ford’s use of the word “profile,” the criticism is pointed. But this isn’t, despite this emphasis, a show about Ford and the FBI’s unwitting racism . Even as it reintroduces a promising black agent, Jim Barney , the show never relies on the black agent, nor the other black characters, to take responsibility for all the black knowledge in the room.
