A new study suggests that mindful yoga practice could be a beneficial complementary therapy for women with PCOS, potentially reducing androgen levels, depression, and anxiety.

Polycystic ovary syndrome ( PCOS ) affects as many as one in 10 women of reproductive age in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This condition is characterized by an imbalance in reproductive hormones, and while there is currently no cure, various treatment options are available. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association suggests that mindful yoga might be a promising approach to managing PCOS symptoms.

Researchers from the Department of Biochemistry at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine investigated the effects of mindful yoga on 31 women diagnosed with PCOS, aged 23 to 42. Participants were divided into two groups: one engaged in mindful yoga for at least one hour, three times a week, for three months, while the other group received no intervention. The results were significant. The mindful yoga group experienced a 29% decrease in free testosterone levels and a trend towards lower DHEA levels. Furthermore, the practice reduced depression by 55% and anxiety by 21% among participants. Some individuals also reported improvements in acne and shorter menstrual cycles. These findings highlight the potential of mindful yoga as a natural and relatively low-risk option for managing PCOS symptoms, particularly in conjunction with existing pharmacologic treatments. Diana Speelman, Ph.D., lead author of the study, acknowledges the effectiveness of conventional medications but emphasizes their potential for side effects. Yoga, she notes, offers a wide range of benefits and is accessible to individuals of diverse ages and fitness levels
