Scientists have discovered a new fungus straight out of a horror or sci-fi flick that lures reclusive Irish cave spiders from the safety of their liars and turns them into zombies. Named G. Attenborough in honor of Sir David Attenborough, the fungus was first spotted in 2021 during the filming of the BBC’s ‘Winterwatch’ in Northern Ireland.
A killer fungus terrorizing cave spidersOnce the terrorizing fungus had been identified as a new species, study co-author Tim Fogg, a cave specialist, found the perpetrator in caves throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.G. Attenborough exclusively targets spiders that prefer a reclusive life out of harm’s way. But once they are in the fungus’ grasp, they begin to expose themselves, suggesting that the intelligent fungus took over.
