The opposing visions at Tuesday night’s council meeting represent a larger division between city councilmembers over how to tackle the issue

A task force aimed at tackling homelessness in Milpitas is recommending a multipronged approach to help the community’s unhoused residents by proposing city-sanctioned encampments for tents and parking for RVs as well as a job training program.

While the mayor was supportive of almost every idea of the task force, Councilmember Karina Dominguez suggested dumpsters at the city’s existing encampments to quell complaints about illegal dumping. That suggestion was rejected by the mayor, who said the dumping was happening on state property and isn’t the responsibility of the city.

In an interview, the mayor was optimistic about the task force, but coupled his views with his own pragmatic take. The opposing visions at Tuesday’s meeting represent a larger division between city councilmembers over how to tackle an issue that has bedeviled Milpitas’ neighbors in San Jose and other surrounding city’s for years.
