Supergirl's headed back to the big screen.
With just a few weeks to go until Supergirl flies into theaters, lead actor Milly Alcock and screenwriter Ana Nogueira opened up about how the summer 2026 release differs from its source material, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely, the eight-issue limited comic book series published from 2021 to 2022 showcased a more hardened Kara Zor-El helping a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll avenge her father's death at the hands of Krem of the Yellow Hills. While Supergirl pulls heavily from the Eisner-nominated Woman of Tomorrow, as is the case with most adaptations, the upcoming DC movie took some creative liberties to fit within the DC Universe framework.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Nogueira shed light on her process for picking out what Woman of Tomorrow content should be retained for Supergirl and what needed to be left behind. The screenwriter noted that the “essence of the character just popped off the page” to her, as well as “the relationship between the two girls.
” Nogueira was determined for people to “see this version of this woman,” and boiled down what the writing process entailed: Her spirit, her journey, her coming into herself, that was the most important. And then the things that you kind of have to leave behind are even just boring writing for boring writing reasons and structure reasons, and like, well, you can't really have that because we're in act two, and that kind of annoying stuff that you have to think about as a writer.
Originally best known as an actor who’s appeared in TV shows like The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist, and Hightown, Nogueira makes her feature writing debut with Supergirl. Though the public won’t see how her Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow adaptation turns out until the end of the month, the DC Studios brass has already tasked her with more work.
Nogueira is writing both a Wonder Woman movie and a Teen Titans movie, both of which also take place within the DCU continuity. Alcock, who previously played Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, was similarly impressed with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow when she read it, telling: Just her pure humility. I was so delighted when I read Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow.
I just fell in love with, A, the imagery of the world that was presented in front of me. It's so vibrant and so vivid and so spectacular. And I just fell in love with Kara and the way that she moved in the world. It was like nothing I'd ever really read before.
Though Supergirl retains the main story beats of Woman of Tomorrow, there are already some noticeable differences that have been shown off in the trailers and other previews. Arguably the biggest among them is the presence of Jason Momoa’s Lobo and David Corenswet’s Superman, as neither character appeared in King and Evely’s story. It’s also been established that in the DCU, Krypto is Kara’s dog rather than her cousin's and traveled with her to Earth when Krypton exploded.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl’s cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze. The movie opens in theaters on June 30, and Alcock’s brief debut as Kara in Superman can be streamed on HBO Max. The actor will also reprise her character in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow.
