The economic cost to individuals with traumatic brain injury continues for years post injury, results of a national cohort study showed.
CHICAGO — Individuals with traumatic brain injury continue to pay a significant economic price years after their injury, new observational data suggested.
To address this gap, the investigators used federally administered Canadian income tax sources linked to national health administrative data to identify adults with TBI aged 19-61 years who were injured between 2007 and 2017 and had no history of trauma-related injury in a 3-year lookback period. Results show that TBI survivors lost, on average, an estimated $7635 in personal income in the first year after their injury, $5095 in year 2, and $5000 in year 3, Malhotra said.
Finally, the estimated total income loss incurred by the TBI-survivor cohort during the 3 years reached $500 million CAD .
