A significant portion of the central US is under threat of potentially strong tornadoes on Sunday, adding to an already active March for twisters. Over 25 million Americans are at an enhanced risk, with the Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley at the highest level.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a warning that a significant portion of the central United States is facing a risk of 'potentially strong tornadoes' on Sunday, further intensifying what has already been a highly active March for tornado occurrences. Over 25 million Americans are under an enhanced risk of experiencing severe weather on Sunday, with the middle Mississippi Valley and lower Ohio Valley facing the highest level of threat. Cities such as Memphis, St.
Louis, Nashville, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati are among those categorized under an enhanced risk of severe weather. An additional 80 million Americans have at least a marginal possibility of encountering severe weather conditions on Sunday. Nevertheless, there remains a degree of uncertainty regarding the extent to which severe weather will manifest, as morning thunderstorms could diminish some of the energy necessary for more potent afternoon storms. Steve Goss, a meteorologist with the Storm Prediction Center, stated that the developing storms on Sunday would pose a substantial, all-hazards severe risk encompassing very large hail, strong/damaging winds, and potentially strong tornadoes within the threatened areas. As new forecast models become available, Goss indicated that the Storm Prediction Center may upscale the severe weather threat across the region.Storms are anticipated to develop in the Central Plains on Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center has indicated that tornadoes are not expected to be large or violent, but a few touchdowns are possible in a region extending from Oklahoma City to north of Kansas City. The storm system could also instigate severe weather on Monday along the East Coast, with potentially strong storms forecast to impact areas from New York to Florida. This storm system arrives at the conclusion of what has been the most active March for tornadoes in at least three decades. The National Weather Service has recorded 236 tornadoes so far this month. The majority of the tornadoes, an estimated 167 touchdowns, occurred during a two-day period on March 14 and 15. Thus far this month, Mississippi has experienced 53 tornadoes, the highest number among any state. Missouri has had 36, while Illinois has had 33. All three states have the potential to increase their tornado totals based on the Storm Prediction Center's forecast
