The Joint Pacific Multi-National Readiness Center exercise brings in international partners and an increase of military convoys on the Richardson Highway.
Published: Feb. 16, 2024 at 4:36 PM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The month of February brings with it an international gathering of soldiers training for battle in the arctic. The Joint Pacific Multi-National Readiness Center exercise also known as the JPMRC is currently underway, but weather delays have kept things on the ground until recently.
In previous weeks, the interior and the rest of Alaska faced frost nip and frost bite as bitter cold temperatures plunged the Fairbanks area into a sub -40F freeze. But a recent warm up has provided a warmer situation for the troops in Alaska, which might seem counter-active to training in an arctic environment but, “we still get great training in the environment,” said Col. John Rotante, Chief of Staff for the 11th Airborne Division.
The exercise focuses on battle operations in arctic conditions utilizing various manual equipment like snow shoes, but also vehicles, such as snowmachines. There’s also a more tropical component as well, “we do two of these events each year,” said Rotante, “One conducted here in Alaska, one conducted in Hawaii.” For the time being the focus is on the north. Not only is it an important opportunity to conduct arctic training, it’s massive scale spans over 100 miles.
