The Alaska Fire Service, managed by BLM, will be setting fire to live munitions training areas used by USARAK to help mitigate future wild fires this season.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Fire Service , managed by the Bureau of Land Management , will begin prescribed burns to reduce the risk of wildfires in the summer.
“We have an agreement with U.S. Army Garrison at Ft. Wainwright to burn military training areas ... that the military will be doing live fire exercises on,” said Beth Ipsen, a public information officer with the AFS. While the AFS does fulfill their agreement each year, they only have a short window during breakup season to conduct those burns. ” that window typically, we burn about half of that around 50 thousand acres per year in it’s in three different areas,” said Ipsen. “We are, we’re trying to go for a burn swath at the edges of that training area so that way if there is a fire that ignites within the interior, that doesn’t get outside of those training areas, it doesn’t impact the communities.
