MILITARY Ordinariate of the Philippines Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio expressed on Saturday, March 10, 2024, disapproval to the decision of the Philippine National Police to allow civilians to own a semi-automatic rifle. In a radio interview, Florencio said he is not in favor of allowing civilians to own and possess firearms not more than 7.62mm..“Personally, I would not want to have our civilians be allowed to possess semi-automatic rifles or any rifles for that matter,” said Florencio..
He cited as an example the situation in the United States, where mass shooting incidents are on the rise. “In America, why do they have such a problem? Because they have a very lax law, wherein anyone can own a gun without that responsibility over a deadly weapon,” lamented the prelate. He also pointed how such a scenario may only become acceptable if the country is in a state of war. 'We are not in a state of war,' stressed Florencio.
