Miley Cyrus performs onstage during the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards at Prudential Center on Aug. 26, 2019 in Newark, N.J.returned to the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Monday night to perform her new single "Slide Away," released just two Fridays before.
Cyrus' performance of the emotional ballad -- which was released in the wake of her reported split with husband Liam Hemsworth -- was filmed with a black-and-white filter, giving the stately performance an even greater elegance. Cyrus' vocals sounded excellent, as she sang in a black dress in front of a string section that lined the perimeter of the stage.
The performance ends a memorable 2010s for Cyrus at the VMAs, which also included a controversial performance alongside Robin Thicke in 2013, a hosting gig in 2015 , and a live debut of her
