Miley Cyrus' complicated relationship with dad Billy Ray Cyrus has made plenty of headlines over the years, but it seems the two have mended their relationship so much they've become nostalgic about their past.
The two entertainers will reunite onscreen in an hourlong “Hannah Montana” 20th anniversary special airing on Disney+ on March 24. The pair’s onscreen reunion comes after Miley Cyrus reportedly stopped speaking to her father for several years in the midst of her parents’ 2022 divorce, according to an interview she gave to Variety earlier this year. In February 2024, the 33-year-old 'Flowers' singer declined to thank her father when she won her first two Grammy awards. She later acknowledged the pair had 'challenges over the years' in a statement on Instagram in May 2025, but said her family had now become her 'priority above all else.' Then, in September 2025, Miley Cyrus surprised fans when she released an emotional song, “Secrets,” as a “peace offering” to her once estranged father, per an Instagram caption. The younger Cyrus told NPR at the time the song acted as 'musical medicine' to help father and daughter repair their tattered bond. “It really helped build a bridge between him and I and reconnecting with each other,” she said. Ahead of Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus’ onscreen reunion later this month, let’s take a look back at their close and complicated relationship. The series told the story of a fictional teenager named Miley Stewart who lived a double life as a pop star named Hannah Montana. The character’s father, Robby , was a retired country music singer who wrote all her hits and managed her career. According to Variety, toward the end of the show’s run, Billy Ray Cyrus’ relationship with Miley Cyrus’s mom, Tish Cyrus, had begun to unravel, which caused his relationship with his daughter to fray.
