A massive group of over 1,500 dolphins, dubbed a 'super pod', was captured on video swimming through Carmel Bay on California's central coast. The drone footage, taken by Evan Brodsky from Monterey Bay Whale Watch, revealed the impressive size of the gathering of Risso's dolphins. Marine biologists say sightings of this many dolphins in one location are rare, particularly along the Monterey coastline which is known for its deep waters.

A massive, mile-long group of more than 1,500 dolphins was captured on camera last week swimming through Carmel Bay on California's central coast, creating what is known as a " super pod ."Using a drone, the video was captured by Evan Brodsky, a captain with the Monterey Bay Whale Watch. The team didn’t initially grasp the sheer size of the super pod that appeared, thinking there were only several hundred dolphins.

"It's not very common to see so many," she said, explaining, "It’s the the most common species of dolphin that we can see here, but such a large number is pretty amazing, especially compared to other areas in the world." According to Talty, the Monterey coastline is a particularly ideal location to spot the dolphins because they prefer extremely deep water.
