Justin Fields wants to show what he can do this training camp, and Mike Tomlin sent a clear message to him about what he wants to see.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields, scrambles out of the pocket during the NFL football team's training camp in Latrobe, Pa., Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Justin Fields had an opportunity to show what he could do over the first two weeks of training camp with Russell Wilson, who wasHowever, the Steelers are not manipulating much of what Fields wants to do on the field. Watching him out there, Fields is running out, making tight window throws, and generally playing very free.

“I guess the big thing, the message that, informally, formally, whatever you want to call it, that I want to continue to relay to him is that I don’t want to squash his natural instincts,”“His mobility and escapability are a weapon, and we don’t want to minimize that. We don’t want him overthinking. We want him to play fast and fluid. I don’t want him to overanalyze what we might be thinking. I want him to do what comes natural as it pertains to his game.

At his best, Fields pairs his physical tools with swift decision-making. When he does that, Fields suddenly looks like an entirely different quarterback. To his credit, Fields has found a gear of consistency this week. Saturday was his worst day of the week, and even that rose to the level of ‘solid’, far better than his first week on campus.

It seems like as Fields becomes more comfortable in the Pittsburgh environment around him, the better he is playing. That is all credit to Fields’ work and preparation to build that chemistry with guys like George Pickens and Van Jefferson. When Wilson does return, Fields has built up enough of a resume to at least push him for the job.
