Both have the president’s ear, but have competing views of America’s role on the world stage, as evidenced by their divergent views on pulling out of Afghanistan, as Trump sought to do in an abruptly-canceled meeting with the Taliban at Camp David over the weekend.

Even as Graham, Paul, and a host of other senators elbow for Trump’s attention, it’s unclear how much sway any would ultimately have in the role. Trump has cycled through three official national security advisers, and none has been able to wrest the levers from the president.who lasted six months in the role, attempted to steer Trump toward a foreign policy anchored in the hawkish Republican tradition; instead, Trump thumbed his nose at the establishment and McMaster resigned.
