In a column this week, Mike Ntombela pays tribute to the late Alex “Goldfinger” Shakoane and thanks him for the love he showed to Sundowns and the community of Mamelodi, and, indeed, the whole of South Africa. 'Yours was a life well lived.'
All of us were from Soweto, but we joined a Pretoria club instead of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which we were expected to join.
We travelled with Mahobe in his new, sleek BMW 535 for our first training session at Muckleneuk Sports Ground in Mamelodi. On arrival, we were met by the other players, including other newcomers in defender Sam Kambule and goalkeeper Mark Anderson, both from Pretoria Callies. Shakoane took over as PR officer and he put Malewa’s vision into intense gear. There were days when Pitso and I would travel on weekends when we were not playing to visit our new team-mates Walter Kutumela, Panyaza and the Mamelodi community.
He liked American boxing legend Muhammad Ali so much so that he always imitated Ali going in for a fight to strike fear in our opponents before the game. Late larger-than-life Alex “Goldfinger” Shakoane remembered
