You would be one down on that right now and it was somebody they really liked.” The NFL’s Rooney Rule mandates that teams must conduct in-person interviews with at least two external minority candidates for head coaching positions. With McDaniel out of the picture, the Browns are now scrambling to satisfy this requirement before they can finalize any hiring decision. “This makes the Rooney Rule a little more complicated because this was setting up where he would have been their first in-person interview. Nate Scheelhaase could have been their second in-person interview next Monday. Now they’re going to have to figure that part of it out before they can hire someone,” explained Orange and Brown Talk host Dan Labbe. This complication could potentially delay the Browns’ hiring process, even if they identify their preferred candidate in the coming days. Without satisfying the Rooney Rule’s in-person interview requirements first, they’d be unable to finalize a hire. The timing is particularly awkward given where the Browns are in their search. They’ve already conducted multiple interviews and appear to have strong interest in candidates like Grant Udinski and Nate Scheelhaase. Having to potentially bring in additional candidates specifically to satisfy the Rooney Rule could create an uncomfortable dynamic. “Now, I mean, it might be a little awkward to go find your second Rooney Rule man or woman. I mean, that feels awkward,” Cabot noted during the podcast discussion. What makes this situation particularly frustrating for the Browns is that it was entirely avoidable. Had they conducted their initial interview with McDaniel in-person rather than virtually, they would already be halfway toward satisfying the Rooney Rule requirements. The decision to keep that interview virtual now forces them to find another external minority candidate for an in-person interview. This predicament adds another layer of complexity to a coaching search that has already seen its share of twists and turns. The Browns have interviewed a wide range of candidates, from established coordinators to promising young assistants, but have yet to zero in on a clear frontrunner. The situation also creates perception problems for both the team and any new minority candidates they might approach. The Browns will want to avoid any appearance that they’re only interviewing additional minority candidates to satisfy a rule rather than out of genuine interest in their candidacy. “Unless there’s something that we don’t know that has already happened or is already happening. There could be something that we don’t know,” Cabot added, suggesting the Browns might have a plan in place that hasn’t yet become public. In the meantime, the search continues with additional interviews scheduled in the coming days. Todd Monken, Jim Schwartz, Grant Udinski and Nate Scheelhaase all remain in the mix for the position. What’s clear is that for a franchise desperately seeking stability, the Browns have inadvertently created additional turbulence in their coaching search. A simple decision to conduct an in-person rather than virtual interview with McDaniel might have prevented this procedural complication entirely.
