After five years with the Dallas Cowboys, Mike McCarthy is expected to depart the team, triggering a new coaching search for Jerry Jones and the organization.

Mike McCarthy's tenure with the Dallas Cowboys is coming to an end as he is not expected to return to the team. WFAA has confirmed reports initially from ESPN's Adam Schefter that McCarthy and the Cowboys haven't engaged in any discussions regarding a new contract, with his current deal set to expire on Tuesday. This means McCarthy will be departing Dallas, potentially landing a new job in cities like Chicago or New Orleans.

With McCarthy's exit, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization will embark on their first coaching search in five years. Jones hired McCarthy ahead of the 2020 season to replace long-time coach Jason Garrett, whose contract, similar to McCarthy's, was reaching its end. The search for McCarthy's successor is already underway, with the Cowboys facing stiff competition from other teams with open coaching positions, including those in Chicago and New Orleans. One top candidate, Mike Vrabel, has already been snatched up by the New England Patriots over the weekend. The Cowboys now have to decide on their next move. They can either try to attract one of the top contenders from the numerous coaching vacancies across the league or delve deeper and consider less conventional options. Among the prominent names circulating in this coaching cycle, the Cowboys could potentially target Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, or even former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Another intriguing possibility is Pete Carroll, who has successful stints with both USC and the Seattle Seahawks. A strong internal candidate is Kellen Moore, who served as McCarthy's offensive coordinator. Moore, having played quarterback for Dallas and being a teammate and play-caller for Dak Prescott, possesses valuable experience within the Cowboys organization. He started his coaching journey under Jason Garrett and oversaw a period of historic offensive success under McCarthy's leadership
