No Cowboys playoff loss would be complete without Mike McCarthy committing crimes against the clock, even if this one wasn't quite a felony
5% if they went for it. That’s still a significant improvement over punting, though. The logic of going for it would be easy to understand: After a stout first half, the Cowboys’ defense looked completely shot on the previous two drives. The 49ers ate up huge chunks of the clock, racking up 155 yards and running out nearly a quarter of the game.
Even worse than the punt was how it was executed. The punt team McCarthy so badly wanted out there took nearly the entire play clock to get the kick off, leaving the Niners with only one play before the two-minute warning. And in fact, the Cowboys were unable to stop the running game yet again ... but Elijah Mitchell gave them life by running out of bounds on a 13-yard run that should have salted the game away.. But it was close.
