Mike Cannon-Brookes has bankrolled a transport reporter for the Australian Associated Press, which is rebuilding its press release distribution business.
The Australian Associated Press has taken funding from billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and nabbed two major press release distribution deals as it looks to diversify revenue and wean itself off government support., which, alongside the Rockefeller Foundation, supports the news outlet’s Future Economies reporting topics.
The transport reporter was hired to cover “transport transition issues”, including electric vehicles, efficiency standards and new fuels, an email to staff announcing the role said. In the case of AAP, which employs 150 people – including 110 on a reporting newswire that is syndicated all over the country – it received a $15 million, two-year lifeline from the government in 2021. And while it has sought funding elsewhere, Ms Davies said it hadn’t been enough.“We definitely require ongoing government funding,” she said.
