Jimenez is seeking his second win in three events this season on the PGA Tour Champions; Jeff Sluman and Jerry Kelly are two strokes back.

Michael Lev After sinking birdie putts on the seventh and 15th holes Saturday, Miguel Angel Jimenez pulled out one of his signature celebrations.

“I want his putter,” said Sluman, who missed several opportunities to make birdies. “He's a great player obviously. He's won a lot out here; he's won a lot of tournaments worldwide. Like Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve around the greens, they have unbelievable imagination to get balls up and down.” Jimenez’s drive rolled to the edge of the water, forcing him to pitch back into the fairway. He had a chance to save par, but his 25-foot, left-to-right putt slid just under the hole.

After something of a scattershot opening round, Kelly worked with his coach, Jim Schuman, and ironed out some kinks. Kelly hit 13 of 14 fairways after going 9 of 14 Friday. “Grandstand, bogey,” Kelly said, referring to the 15th hold Friday. “Cart path, birdie . Bunker shot to a foot, made par on the last hole. It was pretty good.”

• After an opening-round 72, defending champion Kevin Sutherland shot a 5-under 67, climbing 29 spots to a tie for 11th.
