by SBG San Antonio Staff Reports Border counties have began to hire more prosecutors as migrant smuggling chases are on the rise.
The Del Rio sector of Border Patrol has seen a decline in the number of migrants turning themselves in for asylum. That may be causing business for coyotes to go up. All along the counties between the border and I-35, and those on both sides of I-35 like LaSalle and Frio, they are seeing this trend. The DA admits if they had not been able to hire another prosecutor they would be struggling. Gossett-Louis says the number of cases, and the volume is just so high.
According to Zavala County and DA Gossett-Louis, the drivers they are seeing are still young and from out of town. Captain Jimenez says, "The drivers are usually young from Houston, 20’s from Houston, San Antonio or the Austin area."
