A severe weather outbreak produced multiple tornadoes across Illinois and Indiana, causing significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Recovery operations are ongoing as authorities assess the full scale of the destruction.
A powerful storm system swept through the Midwest on June 10-11, 2026, causing extensive damage in Illinois and Indiana . The line of storms produced multiple tornadoes, with particularly severe impacts in Merrillville, Indiana ; Streator, Illinois ; and Hebron, Indiana .
In Merrillville, about 33 miles southeast of Chicago, homes and other buildings were torn apart, downed trees and power lines blocked streets, and part of a high school's roof was ripped off. Authorities and residents searched tornado-ravaged areas and assessed damage the following day. Around 380,000 customers were left without power across Illinois and Indiana, and air travel in the region was disrupted.
The National Weather Service reported at least two other tornadoes in Streator and Hebron, noting that photos and video from those areas showed similar destruction. The agency will be surveying the damage over the next several days to determine the exact number of tornadoes that touched down. Crews worked into the night clearing roads, and multiple agencies assisted local first responders.
The storms also left visual evidence of chaos, with fallen trees and damaged tree branches littering streets in Elkhart, Indiana, and a home in Unionville, Missouri, reduced to rubble. The cleanup and recovery efforts were underway as residents and officials began the process of rebuilding
