Residents in Menomonie, Wisconsin, are raising concerns about a proposed $1.6 billion data center project, demanding more transparency from developers about its potential impacts on water usage, electricity costs, and the environment.
Residents of Menomonie , Wisconsin , a city renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation, are voicing strong concerns over a proposed $1.6 billion data center project. The city council has already annexed and rezoned over 300 acres of farmland for the project, but some council members are demanding more transparency from the developers.
The data center proposal was introduced by Delaware-based Balloonist, LLC, according to a press release on the city's 'Potential Data Center FAQ' website. The name of the operating company behind the project remains undisclosed. 'Neither the council nor the public has been informed about the identity of the company behind this project,' council member Sydney Brennan stated in an email to FOX Business. 'We have been told that it is an American-based company and one of the five major tech firms.' A Facebook group titled 'Stop the Menomonie Data Center' has amassed over 2,000 members who express apprehensions regarding increased water consumption and potential hikes in electricity bills. City Administrator Eric Atkinson addressed these concerns in a July press release, highlighting that 'the City of Menomonie does not operate an electric utility. Balloonist is actively working with Xcel Energy and the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to address energy supply and infrastructure.' The proposed data center is estimated to utilize approximately 75,000 gallons of water daily. The city emphasizes in a press release that the 320-acre site includes buffer zones to mitigate noise pollution on neighboring properties and rights-of-way.Council member Cody Gentz expressed reservations to Wisconsin Public Radio, stating, 'A lot of people are either very skeptical of the project or downright do not want anything to do with a data center, especially given some of the other projects, other data centers that have been built around the state and around the country.' Gentz further added, 'There’s a lot of stories coming out about the negative consequences potentially associated with a data center.' Despite the concerns, the city projects that if the data center is approved, it will generate approximately 1,000 daily jobs during the four to seven-year construction phase, encompassing contractors, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC specialists. Upon completion, the facility is anticipated to employ 50-75 full-time employees earning six-figure salaries and utilize 200-300 contract workers for security, landscaping, and skilled labor.
