Northeast Ohio is bracing for a sharp midweek weather shift as a strong cold front brings fast-accumulating snow, dangerous wind chills and lake-effect bands.
After a sunny and calm start to the week, the weather pattern in Northeast Ohio will turn more active and colder. Precipitation will start as rain on Wednesday and then quickly transition to snow by the evening commute.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — A major pattern change midweek is expected to bring a fast-moving burst of snow, dangerous wind chills and the potential for lake-effect bands across Northeast Ohio, Forecasters said a strong cold front will sweep into the region Wednesday afternoon, rapidly switching from rain to snow, a transition that may arrive to disrupt the evening commute. The weather service warned that a quick inch of accumulation is possible, enough to create slick roads from Cuyahoga through Erie counties. Behind the front, temperatures will tumble into the teens Wednesday night as northwest winds intensify, driving wind chills close to zero. The brief burst of snow is only the first round. Additional lake-effect snow is likely Wednesday night into Thursday, particularly across the traditional snowbelt stretching from Lake County into Crawford County, Pennsylvania. A couple of inches may accumulate, and the weather service noted that Winter Weather Advisories may be needed as conditions evolve. Although no hazardous weather is expected Tuesday, the weather service said the most active stretch of January weather so far is on the horizon.
