Odin has a fascinating premise with a lot to say, coupled with a creative team who can be depended on to create something truly special. With all the ingredients going into this new horror epic, the question isn't whether it's going to be good - it's whether it's going to live up to its absolute masterpiece potential.
Neo Nazis Are Hunted by Ancient Gods in ODIN Tomorrow, Image Comics will release the first issue of Odin, a new horror series from James Tynion IV, Marguerite Bennett, Letizia Cadonici, Jordie Bellaire and Tom Napolitano. The series follows undercover reporter Adela as she embeds within a group of Neo-Nazi punks with a plan to summon the Norse god Odin.
However, the frozen forests of Norway don't yield up the Teutonic avenger they expect, but a far older and deadlier form of god. With a meaty nine issues planned, the first of which is out tomorrow, the first issue's summary reads: Green Room meets Midsommar in JAMES TYNION’s most relentless horror story yet! Adela will do anything for the perfect story.
Including going undercover with Neo Nazi punks headed to the frozen forests of Norway under the misbegotten belief that they can summon Odin and achieve their promised white destiny. But what awaits them in the woods is far older and stranger than any of them can comprehend. And no gods are coming to answer their prayers for help.
Multiple Eisner Award-winning creator JAMES TYNION IV , no-holds-barred writer MARGUERITE BENNETT , rising star artist LETIZIA CADONICI , and Eisner Award-winning colorist JORDIE BELLAIRE conjure a hallucinogenic horror story that leaves absolutely no taboo unbroken. Covers for the first three issues show Adela confronting various skeletal animals, suggesting the eldritch gods of the forest will come in the form of corrupted wildlife.
Horrific imagery already available shows an eagle draped in human skin, a punk's head fading into starlight, and a moon drenched in blood. There are also some images of the one-eyed Norse god Odin, suggesting that at least in some form, the punks will get what they came for - just not the version of it they wanted.
It also seems like each issue will focus on a different member of the Neo Nazi group, exploring their motivations for making this fatal trip into the wilderness. The summaries for issues two and three state: Robert gave up being Roberto to fit in with his Nazi punk friends. Now those same friends have dragged him to the frozen forests of Norway to summon a"god.
" And he may have to give up much, much more before they’re through with him… Adela was chasing a story. Austin sought his great white destiny. Tanner... Tanner just wanted to get laid.
Every member of this doomed expedition set out with a purpose in mind. And every one is going to discover that the old gods of the woods care not at all for their desires. They have lusts of their own.
James Tynion IV Might Be the Definitive Comic Creator of the 2020s James Tynion IV is currently one of the hottest names in comics, with series like Something Is Killing the Children, The Nice House on the Lake, The Department of Truth, Exquisite Corpses and The Deviant acting as a roll-call of the best horror in the industry, if not the best comics currently on the stands. With few missteps, it's all but guaranteed that Odin will be worth every horror fan's time, especially with the other talent on display in this creative team.
Marguerite Bennett is a seasoned writer of superhero fare including Batwoman and A-Force, as well as the recent Witchblade relaunch and M.O. M.: Mother of Madness, co-written with Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke. Letizia Cadonici is fresh off Tynion-collaboration House of Slaughter, and Jordie Bellaire is an Eisner-winner responsible for Marvel's celebrated The Vision, DC's Absolute Wonder Woman, and The Nice House on the Lake.
The team is completed with industry mainstay Tom Napolitano, who has worked on everything from Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Tynion and Gavin Fullerton's The Closet. In short, this is a team with some industry-best titles under their belts and experience working together to put out celebrated comics, set to complement a taut horror scenario with a provocative premise. Fans of everything from Alien to Midsommar shouldn't sleep on Odin's release, as the nine-issue series begins. Odin #1 is coming May 20 from Image Comics.
