At 3-3, there’s little wiggle room the rest of the way
San Diego State coach Sean Lewis and the Aztecs need three victories the second half of the season to be bowl eligible. San Diego State is midway through the 2024 football season and halfway to becoming bowl eligible for the 14th time in 15 seasons.
Said Lewis: “I used to have a mentor that would say that anything above 50 points scored was an A, anything above 40 points was a B, anything above 30 points was a C and anything below that was not a passing grade. “I’m impressed with the resiliency of our club and the way that we continue to persevere,” Lewis said. “Whether it’s through slow starts or stubbing our toe, just working through to where we’re at with everything.”
Running back Marquez Cooper is the Mountain West’s second-leading rusher.The Aztecs have a pair of talented tight ends in Jude Wolfe and Mikey Harrison. They haven’t been as active in the passing game as hoped, maybe because they’ve been needed for extra blocking along the line. SDSU has lost both starters on the left side to season-ending knee injuries. Center Brayden Bryant is hoping to heal a nagging ankle injury during the two-week break between games.
SDSU has 25 sacks this season, which is seven more than all last year. Sophomore edge Trey White has led the way, leading the nation with 11 sacks. “Desire and effort are the biggest things when you get to this time of the year,” SDSU defensive coordinator Eric Schmidt said. “The guys that are playing the hardest and the longest are the teams that are generally the most successful.
