“We’re going to try to make an impact for nine days while we’re over there to see what we can do,” Pat Greco told Middleburg Heights City Council Tuesday, explaining he has traveled widely to volunteer elsewhere in times of humanitarian need.

Krusz has Polish roots, noting his full surname is Kruszewski.

“Grandpa Krusz used to ask me, ‘When have you paid your community rent?’,” Krusz said, recalling his grandfather’s life as a businessman/entrepreneur and retired Elyria firefighter. “He always did so much for his community. When I heard what is going on over there, it hit me hard. And I decided I wanted to go with Pat.”

They have raised more than $5,500 in donations, which will be combined with $4,000 previously raised through Strongsville Rotary and other donors.“When I got there, I saw people in despair,” Jeris said, saying he raised $65,000 and distributed it to Ukrainian refugee families in need. “It’s like taking every emotion you’ve ever experienced, taking it outside of you, beating it up and putting it back inside you. I just wanted to do something to help.
