The Biloxi NAACP held the program, talking about the importance of the marker and that moment in history.The “Middle Passage to Biloxi” marker also commemorates the arrival of those individuals during that time. Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project Founder Ann Chinn says it’s not about slavery - it’s about acknowledging the impacts on history.

“I think it’s doing what I think is very important in this country and the people of Biloxi and the people of Gulf Coast. We have so often, maybe because we didn’t know, we didn’t acknowledge this history and the contributions of the Africans. This is not about slavery. This is about a group of people who built this country.
