U.S. ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee's comments about potential Israel expansion have sparked regional pushback.
has reached out to the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and the U.S. State Department for comment via email on Saturday.and broader U.S. foreign policy, went to Israel to meet with Huckabee, another former Fox News host, for a sit-down interview that aired Friday.
The meeting came after Carlson has repeatedly made claims of widespread mistreatment of Christians in Israel. Huckabee’s comments have fueled criticism echoing long-running allegations of Zionist expansionism and claims that Israel is seeking to further extend its control in the region. The comments come amid the war in Gaza, in which Israel has encroached on previous borders, and increased construction in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Huckabee has long opposed a two-state solution for Israel and Palestinians. Israel is also a member of President Donald Trump's Board of Peace which seeks to rebuild Gaza after mass devastation and war.Huckabee told Carlson in their interview that Israel has a biblical right to land spanning much of the Middle East. The ambassador was responding to Carlson’s reference to a Genesis verse describing land promised to Abraham’s“from the Euphrates to the Nile " Carlson noted the biblical description refers to territory that is"basically the entire Middle East," saying, “Would be the Levant, so that would be Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon. It would also be big parts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.” The former Arkansas governor said, “Not sure we’d go that far. I mean, it would be a big piece of land.” When further pressed on the matter by Carlson, Huckabee replied, “It would be fine if they took it all.” Huckabee later suggested the stance was a “hyperbolic statement," according to The Hill. He also noted that Israel is not looking to expand its territory and has a right to its current borders. Meanwhile, neighboring Arab ministries have sharply condemned his comments, with Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry issuing its “strongest condemnation and complete rejection” of the remarks, which it called “irresponsible” and “a violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and established diplomatic norms.” The ministry said such comments “set a dangerous precedent” and “reflect a disregard for the distinguished relations between the countries of the region and the United States of America.” Egypt’s foreign ministry said Huckabee’s comments were a “blatant violation” of international law, and stating “Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory or other Arab lands.” The League of Arab States also issued a statement on the matter, saying, “Statements of this nature—extremist and lacking any sound basis—serve only to inflame sentiments and stir religious and national emotions.”,"The remarks contradict religious and historical facts, international law, and the position expressed by US President Donald Trump rejecting the annexation of the West Bank.","The official spokesperson for the Ministry, Ambassador Fuad Al-Majali, rejected these absurd and provocative statements, which constitute a violation of diplomatic norms, an assault on the sovereignty of the countries of the region, and a flagrant breach of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and which contradict the declared position of the American President Donald Trump in rejecting the annexation of the occupied West Bank."Kenneth Roth, former director of Human Rights Watch, said in an X post on Saturday :"Trump’s over-the-top ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, would be happy if Israel took over not only all of Palestine but also much of the rest of the Middle East. It says something about Trump that he chose an envoy like that.": US policy in the Middle East is being driven by fundamentalist nutters 'Mike Huckabee says it would be ‘fine’ if Israel took all Middle East land. Trump ally tells Tucker Carlson Israel has biblical right to land from ‘wadi of Egypt to the great river.'" Mark Seddon, director of the Centre for United Nations Studies at the University of Buckingham, said in an X post Saturday about Huckabee's commentsIn a polarized era, the center is dismissed as bland. At, ours is different: The Courageous Center—it's not"both sides," it's sharp, challenging and alive with ideas. We follow facts, not factions.
