The International Court of Justice will hear South Africa’s request to order Israel to halt its Rafah offensive. Nearly 600,000 have fled the area, the U.N. said.
The International Court of Justice will hold hearings Thursday and Friday on South Africa’s request that the court order Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah and do more to protect civilians in Gaza. The top U.N. court announced Tuesday that it will hear arguments from South Africa on Thursday and from Israel on Friday, the latest development in a closely watched case.
On May 10, South Africa returned to the court to ask for additional measures “as a result of Israel’s ongoing military assault on Rafah.” South Africa’s request says the Israeli operation poses an “extreme risk” to humanitarian supplies and basic services in Gaza, to the survival of the Palestinian medical system, and to “the very survival of Palestinians in Gaza as a group.
