You can no longer get free access to Windows 10 and 11 if you’re upgrading from Windows 7 or 8, though you can still go from 10 to 11.
Does it go to 11? Well, no, not if you’re trying to get access to Microsoft’s latest version of its Windows OS using the age-old Windows 7 backdoor. Microsoft finally ended the years-long deal that allowed those with Windows 7 and Windows 8 keys to access Windows 11 for free by first upgrading through Windows 10.
Now eight years later, Microsoft finally did away with the 7 to 11 pipeline. Windows 7 has long been defunct, and Microsoft finally stopped offering any and all security updates for both 7 and 8.1 earlier this year. Windows 10 will similarly go the way of the Dodo on Oct. 14, 2025 as Microsoft plans to end all software support for the old OS.
