Tech giant Microsoft is set to invest $5 billion to bolster Australia’s cyber defences. The new commitment was unveiled alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the second day of his visit to Washington.

The prime minister is joined on his trip by Australia’s Ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd and Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. According to Mr Clennell, the money will go towards an artificial intelligence industry in Australia over the next two years. “He also announced Microsoft would work with the Australian Signals Director to build a cyber shield in the hope of stopping more Medibank, Optus type hacks on Australians personal information,” he said.
